RAM gives a place for applications to be processed on a short-term basis. It is one of the most important factors for determining the performance of the system. Some of the main uses of computer memory are: Secondary Memory is the physical device used for storing data permanently. The memory that cannot be directly processed by the CPU is: Secondary Memory Memory That Cannot be Processed by the CPU The Computer Memory System consists of small bits (0 or 1).ĮPROM( Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)ĮEPROM( Electrically Erasable Read Only Memory) The computer also has the ability to store and recall all the information and programs fed into it, which enables it to reuse the same set of instructions over and over again when required. These programs are specific codes which form the base of computer functioning as they enable computers to perform a wide range of different tasks, from very simple tasks like performing certain calculations to some tedious tasks like browsing the web and sharing information across the world. Modern computers can perform generic sets of operations known as programs. Computer may run without the secondary memory.A computer is a digital electronic machine that can be programmed to carry out any specific sequences of arithmetic or logical operations on its own.It is used for storage of data in a computer.Data is permanently stored even if power is switched off. These are magnetic and optical memories. The contents of secondary memories are first transferred to the main memory, and then the CPU can access it. CPU directly does not access these memories, instead they are accessed via input-output routines. These are used for storing data/information permanently. This type of memory is also known as external memory or non-volatile. A computer cannot run without the primary memory. It is the working memory of the computer.Data is lost in case power is switched off.It is divided into two subcategories RAM and ROM. The data and instruction required to be processed resides in the main memory. These memories are not as fast as registers. It is generally made up of semiconductor device. It has a limited capacity and data is lost when power is switched off. Primary memory holds only those data and instructions on which the computer is currently working. The disadvantages of cache memory are as follows − It stores the program that can be executed within a short period of time. It consumes less access time as compared to main memory.Cache memory is faster than main memory. The advantages of cache memory are as follows − The parts of data and programs are transferred from the disk to cache memory by the operating system, from where the CPU can access them. It is used to hold those parts of data and program which are most frequently used by the CPU. It acts as a buffer between the CPU and the main memory. The address of these locations varies from 0 to 65535.Ĭache memory is a very high speed semiconductor memory which can speed up the CPU. For example, if the computer has 64k words, then this memory unit has 64 * 1024 = 65536 memory locations. Each location or cell has a unique address, which varies from zero to memory size minus one. The memory is divided into large number of small parts called cells. Computer memory is the storage space in the computer, where data is to be processed and instructions required for processing are stored. It is used to store data and instructions.
